Group Leader/Principal Scientist - Surface and Polymeric Materials - Job Opening ID 553882  

As a Group Leader/Principal Scientist, you lead a group of engineers, scientists, and technicians in research and development in the field of surface science with a focus on surface modification, surface coating, and surface characterization. In addition, you are responsible for elaborating new strategies to develop materials with new surface properties aligned with business needs.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Lead 2-3 projects related to surface sciences. You will propose or be assigned projects or programs for extension of present technology in the field of surface science such as surface modification of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials using various chemical and physical treatment methods such as, wet chemistry, plasma treatments, PVD and CVD deposition, electroless, and electrode position.
  • Utilize broad technical background and experience to develop and/or improve products, and process performance.
  • Communicate technically with internal competencies, university collaborators and customers and utilize knowledge to advance projects and productive synergies.   
  • Develop the surface science competency in line with Saint-Gobain businesses. In addition to managing individual projects, manages group's project portfolio by understanding needs of the business. 
  • Guide, mentor and motivate an outstanding multidisciplinary team. Recommend a vision for the team consistent with center’s existing and future needs.
  • You will manage the group's project portfolio by closely follows progress, budget, timeline, and deliverables for projects led by direct reports.
  • Provide testing services for high end analyses and develop new test methods related to surface sciences. You will be in charge of several high-hand instruments, and will have to ensure the development of elaborated methods to best characterize different material surfaces.  Upon approval, you will be responsible for equipment purchases.
  • Champion efforts to drive HSE initiatives and consciousness in the organization.

 
COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Must possess strong leadership skills capable of motivating and developing a technical team with team members at different locations and/or in multiple countries. 
  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive constructive feedback, and ability to flex style to match needs of direct reports. 
  • Project management excellence using project management tools and the ability to lead multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Surface coating using pulsed electroplating, electroplating, and electroless film deposition methods. 
  • Surface modification using physical (Plasma treatments) and chemical (wet chemistry) approaches. 
  • Wide range of expertise in surface characterization techniques.
  • Experience with the structure-property relationship of materials. 
  • Demonstrated ability to write strong technical documents and give strong technical presentations to wide variety of audience.  

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  •  BS Degree with a minimum of 15+ years’ experience, or MS with 10+ years of experience, or PhD with 6+ years in surface science or related field. 
  • Must possess a body of technical work and/or track record of product/process development commensurate with their years of experience in surface science, polymer science, or related field. 
  • Prior experience managing direct reports.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with all levels of management, customers, all colleagues, and direct reports 
  • Strong project leadership capabilities and demonstrated ability to manage a team.
