New Product Development Design Engineer - CertainTeed Platform Design - Job Opening ID: 558762

CertainTeed is growing the design team in Northboro, MA – right outside of Boston! We are seeking an entrepreneurial New Product Development Engineer (Design Engineer) to design and develop a wide range of products and equipment that will improve the sustainability, performance, and appeal of homes and buildings. The North American brand for the building industry, CertainTeed is part of the Saint-Gobain group, a global leader in building, industrial, automotive, aerospace, and medical product innovation. We are focused on combining this expertise in scientific R&D with product design that questions traditional limitations while helping our customers improve their lives and the built environment.

This cutting-edge position will be part of a small, multi-disciplinary team using the latest design and prototyping technologies to get products in front of customers quickly, solicit feedback, and iterate new ideas. Our product development philosophy is to fail fast, early, and question frequently to continuously improve our understanding of the customers’ needs and the right way for us to meet that need. This role can expect 30% CAD/CAE, 30% prototyping, and 40% collaboration with teammates, internal colleagues, external collaborators (startups, etc.), and customers. You will be deeply involved in multiple projects at a time covering a variety of technologies, product categories, and project stages. If this sounds like you, you could be just what we are seeking!!
We are looking for the following qualities in a teammate: 

  • Entrepreneurialism: We feel true ownership over whether our projects result in the improvement our customers’ lives and the health of the planet. You will need to be deeply selfdriven to probe who exactly the customer is for your project and what their needs truly are. Also, you’ll be frequently pitching concepts to customers, partners, and internal executives for feedback and support. 
  • Working in the Grey: One of the exciting challenges of this position is learning, through interviews and customer co-creation, who the end-user is for a particular new product idea and what problems truly need to be solved. Projects are scoped, defined, scheduled, and executed through many iterations of getting feedback on prototypes. This is not a black and white role, and determining what the metrics are is just as important as executing on them.
  • Creative Naivety: The vast majority of our work is making things, trying them (with customers), and using the knowledge about what failed to inform subsequent iterations. Knowing that innovation is an iterative process, you’ll need to stay open-minded (naïve) about what the right product is, seeking to learn as much from what doesn’t work as from what does. 
  • Sleeve Roller-Upper: We make a lot of prototypes because they help us prove our ideas don’t work, freeing us to quickly move on to new ones. We’re looking for someone comfortable around 3D Printers, CNC Routers, Laser Cutters, Machine Shops, Wood Shops, Power Tools, and Construction Sites. Designing a part in Solidworks on a laptop that’s covered in aluminum shavings next to a soldering iron, prototype PCB, and piles of foam, plastic, and aluminum prototypes is how you like to work – perfect (in a safety first environment, of course)! We are a small team, so we all do everything.

  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 5+ years’ experience, including Mechanical Analysis, Solidworks, Prototyping, Testing.
  • Highly Desirable: Strong experience working with 3rd party manufacturing.
  • Desirable: Strong exposure to FEA, Comfort with basic Electrical Design and Programming.
  • Highly motivated, driven and dynamic individual capable of handling a fast-paced global environment that is growing and evolving to meet the needs of the market while at the same time balancing the ability to provide support for the core business and our key growth areas.
