R&D Group Leader - Job Opening ID:561680

The selected candidate will be joining a R&D group based in SGR North America (USA) to support the technical leadership of Saint-Gobain Ceramic Materials division in the field of ceramics and glass.


The R&D Group Leader in SGR North America is expected to effectively lead the local R&D team located in Northborough (MA) and manage the project portfolio to support our Sintered Ceramics R&D activity. The group leader also coordinates the technical support to our customers, participates to Joint Development projects with key customers and is in charge of developing our application expertise and our service offer. Finally, the incumbent works closely with plant management and provides scientific and technical support.

  • Manage the R&D team in Northboro.
  • Carry out a diverse R&D project portfolio according to SG Innovators’ Handbook.
  • Manages several Join Development programs with key customers.
  • Utilizes technical expertise and scientific background to contribute to the development and/or improvement of products, processes and technical solutions.
  • Act as the liaison to the market and sales managers to organize and coordinate the worldwide technical support to our customers and participate in the department strategy.
  • Participate in the definition of the local R&D project portfolio.
  • Contribute to R&D portfolio rejuvenation, by proposing / promoting new ideas, encouraging innovation, and supporting exploratory work within the worldwide R&D teams.
  • Oversee the technology transfer of R&D projects to local manufacturing plant(s).
  • Provides and organizes technical support to local production team.
  • Seeks the development of the team skills through training and coaching.
  • Manage IP portfolio: hold regular reviews with relevant market / R&D managers and IP specialists, make proposal and follow-up on decisions, strengthen IP protection, optimize expenses.
  • Promote a grass-roots approach to lab safety and safety training of the group.


  • BS Degree with 15+, Masters with 10+ or PhD with 6+ years of experience Ceramic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or Chemistry.
  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: demonstration of familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation, IP, Patents, and technical documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects within a structured process (Gate).
  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Demonstrate ability to network within and out of group.
  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment required.
  • Develop ability to maintain composure and organize teams in high pressure situation.
  • Demonstrate understanding of company policies and of corporate structure.
  • Ability to travel 25% domestic and international.
