R&D Manager - Life Sciences - Job Opening ID: 542200



Saint-Gobain Life Sciences is looking for an R&D leader who will uses technical knowledge with strong supervisory skills to lead groups of engineers, scientists, and technicians in the development of new and improved products and processes in the support of the Fluid Systems SOA (Life Sciences and Process Systems SBUs). You will also involve world-wide responsibilities for managing the Life Sciences SBU.


You will manage the Silicone Platform and be responsible for all development activity in the area of silicone research globally for the Fluid Systems SOA, including materials, process and applications development. Reporting relationships will be established at the Northboro R&D Center, and with support to multiple manufacture sites globally, in the US, Europe and Asia.

You are responsible for technology roadmap for silicone research to support the FLS business and position it for growth. The roadmap will consist of materials development, processing technology such as extrusion and molding. A major focus will be on the development of custom silicone formulations to support the co-development model for custom products. You will utilize knowledge of silicone processing and materials science to develop new technologies for FLS in major markets such as medical device, laboratory, pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, document processing and dairy markets. The research will span both SBUs (Life Sciences and Process Systems). Raw material and competitive benchmarking will also be important. Customer and factory service work is an important part of the job responsibility.

- A graduate degree, MS or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Sciences, Material Sciences and/or related field is required

- Industrial experience is required i.e. MS with 12+ years of experience, or PhD with 7+ years of industrial experience

- 5+ years of experience in Life Sciences markets such as Medical, Pharmaceutical and Bioprocessing

- 5+ years of managing experience of professional intercultural level staff, including mentoring and developing team members

- Ability to autonomously build relationships in order to work effectively leading a team of scientists and engineering associates in a geographically dispersed matrix team.

- Strong Project Leader/Management capabilities in stage gate style with own international Project Manager experience

- Intellectual Properties (Invention Disclosure process & Patents) experience

- A proven record of growing a business through new product introduction

- Prior budget responsibility preferred.
