Research Engineer II System - SOFC - Job Opening ID: 558755

Saint-Gobain’s North American R&D center is looking for driven, talented, and energetic researchers to join our current team in conducting hands-on laboratory experiments for key development programs. Projects will focus on process and product development activities related to Saint-Gobain extensive product line. As a Research Engineer, the candidate will research and develop new technologies to improve products within our business working with cross-functional matrix teams. The research and development works include electrochemical characterizations, device thermal management, process efficiency improvements, and cost optimizations. The candidate will take project objectives and generate stage-gate project plans including resource planning, risk mitigations, executions, and will provide technical reports in different stages of projects. The candidate will interact with multiple external partners for efficient project operations.



This position will have a focus on research and development in all aspects of the group’s technical area and new product development, thereby building technical depth in multiple areas. Under the direction of the manager, the candidate will utilize his/her technical background in chemical engineering and/or electrochemistry to support research and development projects with crossfunctional, matrix teams. 

  • Utilize knowledge in electrochemistry to evaluate SOFC device performance, analyze and interpret characterization datasets, provide feedbacks, make suggestions on next steps to the reporting manager. 
  • Utilize knowledge in chemical systems to improve thermal management, process efficiency and hardware design of critical system components, such as the SOFC hot box and integrated fuel processors. Generate project plans with partners under reporting manager’s supervision to accelerate product development. 
  • Work with technicians to manage and maintain sets of sophisticated test equipment. 
  • Prepare samples from a fuel cell device before and after stress tests, characterize them using various analytical tools such as optical microscope, SEM, EDS, XRD. 
  • Generate or improve Excel macro programs to efficiently process various electrochemical test data.
  • Clearly communicate technical issues, approaches, and results in technical reports and presentations. 
  • Manages and documents projects effectively under minimal supervision by a technical leader.    
  • Interact with outside partners and the rest of R&D team for efficient project operations


  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with their years of experience including but not limited to: demonstration of familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of basic data and interpretation.    
  • Incumbent analyzes and reports results using statistical tools and analytical data of medium complexity. 
  • Demonstrate good knowledge in HSE. 
  • Demonstrate understanding of company policies.  
  • Develop understanding of corporate structure. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with the plant, with customers and to report progress on projects.  
  • The successful candidate should be able to solve technical problems by combining literature search, scientific knowledge and hands on experiments.   


  • BS Degree with a minimum of 3+ years’ experience, or an entry level candidate with a MS degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, or related disciplines. 
  • 3+ years of hands on experience with electrochemical processes/equipment in an industrial or research setting required. 
  • Electrochemistry expertise in battery, fuel cell or electrolyzer systems required. 
  • Chemical system designs including heat and mass balance, energy flows, catalytic reactions experience preferred.
