Research Engineer II - Transport Phenomena - Competency Research Labs/Materials Technology - Job Opening ID: 569911

The Materials Technology group is looking for a Research Engineer II to join their team within the Competency Research Labs at the Saint-Gobain Research North America center located in Northboro, MA. The Materials Technology group works closely with Saint Gobain’s various business units to solve problems, develop new products, and improve production processes.


This position is looking for a driven, talented, and energetic researcher to perform hands-on experimental measurements and to develop analytical and numerical models in the field of transport phenomena for the development and improvement of products and processes. The candidate will take project objectives and transform them into actionable tasks including research of technologies, design and execution of experiments and models, analysis of results, and generation of technical reports and presentations.


The main responsibilities for this role will be to:

  • Lead multiple projects in the transport phenomena field to which you are assigned. The projects may be related to the development of competencies and to the internal dissemination of knowledge and information, or directly driven by needs expressed by Saint-Gobain businesses. Projects are managed effectively with minimal supervision by a technical leader.
  • Elaborate projects’ scientific strategy, goals and deliverables with minimum guidance.
  • Identify and, when relevant, partner with internal competencies and/or universities to advance projects and develop competencies.
  • Summarize projects’ approach and results in concise and accurate technical memos.
  • Communicate projects’ strategy and results to internal customers and management through formal presentations.
  • Demonstrate open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility and seek out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Champion efforts to drive HSE initiatives and consciousness in the organization.


  • Ability to proactively interact with internal customers to:
    • Clearly define their needs.
    • Reach a consensus on projects’ strategy, goals, and deliverables.
  • Ability to autonomously conduct order-of-magnitude analyses to identify major transport phenomena and simplify analyses to the relevant physics.
  • Ability to design, set up, and conduct relevant lab experiments with minimum guidance.
  • Ability to establish long term and short term projects’ scientific strategy and goals with minimum guidance.
  • Proficiency with CFD software such as Ansys Fluent, Comsol, or any other simulation package.
  • Proficiency with Matlab or other numerical computing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to write concise and accurate technical documents and give strong technical presentations to a wide variety of audience.
  • Experience with transport phenomena related sensors is a plus (example: thermocouples, infrared cameras, heat flux sensors, flow meters).
  • Experience in the development of finite volume, finite difference, or finite element codes to numerically solve relevant governing equations is a plus.



  • BS degree with a minimum of 3+ years’ industry experience or an entry level candidate with an MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with all levels of management, customers, colleagues, and external partners.
  •  Experience in the development of experimental and numerical approaches to solve transport phenomena problems is preferable.
