The Research Technician safely performs advanced specialized technical functions involving testing, analyzing, improving, installing, operating, and/or solving problems concerning complex processes, equipment and products for assigned areas. The selected candidate will be joining the Coated Abrasives R&D group in a position based in Worcester (MA, USA) to support the continued technical leadership of the Coated Abrasives business unit for the abrasives industry


Your main job responsibilities will be to: 

  • Maintain laboratories and equipment including set-up, operation and trouble shooting of experimental equipment or instruments. Leads troubleshooting initiatives and machine repair efforts. Interacts with facilities and outside contractors for machine and equipment repairs.
  • Prepare and process material sampling through active involvement in standard and exploratory experiment design, routine laboratory activity to make prep materials and test samples, and development work with non-routine R&D assignments such as design of fixtures for experimental set-up and establishing proper data acquisition.
  • Support engineers and scientists in R&D team with their projects.
  • Execute and/or support commercial and manufacturing support requests.
  • Manage and document projects and tasks effectively with supervision.
  • Play leading role in lab management: safety aspects, equipment maintenance, 5S, lab audit preparation and action follow-up, lab postings, regular equipment checks etc.
  • Conduct hands-on experimental work.


  • The successful candidate will have a history of continuously improving operations in his/her areas of responsibility, cross-training and flexibility to meet changing team needs. 
  • Need to be able to work autonomously and accomplish task with minimum supervision.
  • The successful candidate should be results-driven and hold strong commitment to timeline and delivery
  • Good written and verbal communication skills are needed to document work in a lab notebook, write test reports or SOPs, and to provide project updates.
  • Capability to use personal computer and Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel and Word, is a must. Able to graph and chart data is a plus.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, skills on presentation are preferred
  • General laboratory knowledge including proper chemical handling

  • Create a grassroots proactive culture of safety (physical) by encouraging, empowering, and involving all staff in safety and attending regular onsite safety meetings.
  • Able to work remotely and independently in a plant environment as needed to scale up products or processes.


  • High school diploma, or demonstrated equivalent, with 1-5 years’ experience
  • Work experience in ceramic materials in a R&D or plant environment
  • Work experience with process machinery. Preferably mixing powders, slurries and/or waterborne coatings. Safety and 5S experience related to this work is required as well.
