Research Technician - Grinding & Finishing Technology - Job Opening ID: 558447

Saint-Gobain is seeking a Research Technician to join the Grinding & Finishing Technology (GFT) team at the Northboro Research and Development Center (NRDC).

You will perform specialized R&D assignments involving testing, analyzing, improving, installing, operating and solving problems concerning processes, equipment and products for assigned areas.


  • Perform complex and specialized operations on a variety of machines and a variety of materials including metals, polymers and ceramics.
  • The candidate should have experience in setting up and operating various types of equipment such as complex assembly, processing, or test equipment with CN/CNC & PLC controls.
  • Working with engineers in the Grinding & Finishing Technology group, interacting with internal customers, and collaborating with the design of special fixtures & tooling, as needed.   
  • Conduct experiments as assigned in the areas of finishing, grinding, machining, tribology and metrology according to standard operating procedures (SOPs), or other specific instruction.  Work with project leaders to develop new test methods, to improve existing techniques and to update SOPs. 
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Must have work experience with various equipment such as test equipment with CN/CNC & PLC controls, and/or lathes, milling machines, grinders and other finishing machines. Must have the ability to read blue prints. 
  • High degree of demonstrated mechanical aptitude in the setup, operation, and maintenance of various equipment such as complex assembly and processing or test equipment with CN/CNC & PLC controls.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, SOLID Works, and other CAD/CAM systems is desired. 
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with reporting software such as Microsoft word and excel.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experimental work history.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety operations.
  • Ability to work with a diverse project team in an open and collaborative mode.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Responsibility for 5S and EHS for the activity / area assigned.
  • High school diploma, or demonstrated equivalent, with 0-5 years’ experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize and maintain complex production equipment.
  • Experience in a lab environment demonstrating attention to details and observational skills.
