Senior Research Engineer –Process Technology - Job Opening ID: 566437

The candidate will work within wet coatings processing technology team. The team works closely with Saint-Gobain’s various business units to improve production processes, solve problems, and develop new products.


The candidate will be expected to manage R&D projects involving formulation, mixing, pumping, fluid handling, web handling, industrial automation, and/or coating processes. While not expected to be an expert in all these areas, the candidate must be able to research and understand new areas of process technology quickly. The projects will be executed using pilot production tools at the R&D center and in collaboration with our manufacturing sites. The candidate should enjoy learning, collaborative problem solving, and potentially designing new processes and cutting edge process technologies. They will be expected to create and execute project plans, design and conduct experiments, analyze results, and present findings in written and oral formats.

Working in the areas of fluid preparation, delivery, and web coating technologies, the candidate will:

  • Execute R&D projects to improve or create new products, optimize processes, reduce costs, and support fundamental research.
  • Work collaboratively with all levels of the organization to identify projects, outline plans and transition solutions into manufacturing.
  • Stay aware of technologies and advancements in relevant technical domains.
  • Work closely with engineers and production plant operators to execute on projects in a safe, productive and collaborative manner.


  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with years of experience including but not limited to demonstration of hands-on experimental work, familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of data and interpretation.
  • Project leadership including: project management, experimental design, delegation, problem solving and teamwork.
  • Ability to manage several projects independently and simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and ability to collaborate effectively in a matrix structure with people from a wide range of backgrounds including business, manufacturing, research, engineering, marketing, process technicians, and operators.
  • Demonstrated adequate knowledge in HSE.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues at various levels.
  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment.
  • Ability to network within and outside of the group.
  • Capability to understand company policies and corporate structure.


  • BS Degree with a minimum of 12+ years of experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience, or PhD with 3+ years’ in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, textile engineering, pulp & paper engineering, materials science, or related field.
  • Professional experience in a manufacturing environment is desired.
  • Experience with mixing, pumping, or fluid handling systems is desired.
  • Experience with roll-to-roll processes and web handling is desired.
  • Experience with execution of experimental designs (DOE) is a plus.
  • Experience with coating processes and/or formulations is a plus.
  • Experience transitioning new processes and products to manufacturing is a plus.
  • Ability to travel occasionally (up to ~10%) for meetings and manufacturing trials.
