Senior Research Engineer- Aerospace R&D Applied Physics - Job Opening ID: 575993

Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for a driven, talented, and energetic senior research engineer to join our growing Aerospace R&D team.


Saint-Gobain is a world leader in developing innovative, high-performance solutions through our unparalleled expertise in composite materials design and optimization. We are searching for a scientist to research and develop new technologies that strengthen our product portfolio, which encompasses airborne and ground-based radomes, multilayer aerospace windshields, as well as other composite products in a variety of markets. The new team member will have the opportunity to leverage their skillset in applied physics and computational analysis by contributing to a dynamic research team focusing on optimization, physics modeling, and distributed numerical tools for engineering design.


The selected candidate will be expected to lead R&D projects as part of a collaborative research team. The team must interface effectively with aerospace design engineers, commercial team members, and manufacturing/process engineers in order for the business to expand its potential.


The candidate will need to:


  • Extensively utilize broad expertise in applied physics to develop numerical tools to accelerate product development and empower commercialization.
  • Rely on knowledge in optics / EM, fluid-structure interaction, and/or multi-physics modeling.
  • Use coding experience (Python preferred) for data analysis, model reduction, and machine learning/heuristics to explore and propose innovative designs.
  • Leverage engineering optimization techniques to improve Aerospace composites product performance under manufacturing and process constraints.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously. Is able to balance creativity with process and documentation.
  • Work collaboratively within an agile development team. Seeks out feedback from others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Communicate technically with internal and external collaborators and utilize knowledge to advance projects and identify productive synergies.
  • Stay aware of new technology applications within the Aerospace industry as well as modern academic methodologies and literature.




  • Coding experience (Python preferred).
  • Interest in machine learning / heuristics, optimization and dimension reduction techniques.
  • Interest in data visualization and analysis.
  • Experience in numerical workflow development.
  • Strong academic training in either optics / EM, fluid-structure interaction, and/or multi-physics computations.
  • Openness to learning solid/applied mechanics, finite element analysis, physical characterization (primarily mechanical).
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and actively seek out feedback from others.
  • Strong communication skills and the desire to advance projects and propose new productive synergies.




  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD. Mechanical Engineering/applied mechanics, Material Science, Applied Physics, Electrical engineering or Applied Mathematics.
  • Practical exposure to numerical coding (Python, Matlab, C/C++, Fortran…
  • Experience with some of the following physical characterization techniques: Optics, RF, Fluid/solid interaction, contact/adhesion, Solid mechanics.
  • Experience with Python language preferred.
  • Experience with Aerospace and/or Composites materials physical testing preferred.
