Senior Research Engineer - Aesthetic Team - CertainTeed Platform - Job Opening ID: 549860



We are currently seeking to fill a Senior Research Engineer role to strengthen our current team in surface modification & analysis. This role will focus on enabling new aesthetics & surfaces for interior and exterior construction products using your understanding of coatings and surface science, as well as the link between optical properties and appearance.


The successful candidate will use their technical, scientific and soft skills to be an active contributor, an enthusiastic learner and a support for change in an intellectual environment comprising colleagues from diverse fields of design, science, and engineering.


Primary responsibility includes:


  • Demonstrated ability to define and manage projects and work under minimal supervision.
  • Collaborating closely and identifying synergies with other CertainTeed and Saint-Gobain R&D centers.
  • Communicating clearly scientific, technical issues, approaches, and results in technical reports and presentations.
  • Proposing and driving methods, solutions and tools inspired from best practices in other industries.
  • Attending technical and scientific meetings and symposia; interacting with the building and design community to create collaborations with leading universities and/or construction technology laboratories to ensure that the CertainTeed is technologically at the cutting edge of the industry.
  • Providing technical insight into various phenomena that contribute to light reflection, solar performance and aesthetic aspects of building materials
  • Modifying surfaces via coatings and other techniques to manipulate appearance, solar performance, moisture transport, durability and other functionalities.
  • Applying advanced scientific knowledge and analytical methods to create and evaluate new materials, products and/or technologies

BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or other related disciplines, with a strong background in surface science and/or coatings and experience in optics and image analysis.


Prior research experience (academic or applied) will include measurement and modification of surfaces linked to the optical properties and appearance of the material, as well as programming experience with software such as Python, MATLAB and/or OpenCV.
