Senior Research Engineer - Certainteed Platforms - Aesthetics - Job Opening ID: 548492



We are currently seeking to fill a Senior Research Engineer role to strengthen our current team in aesthetic, digital visualization and design. In this role you will be part of the CertainTeed R&D platforms, to help CertainTeed to leverage digital tools and science as well as finding and exploring new opportunities for design and communication of a large variety of products.


This role will focus on finding the best ways to support design and communication by using digital techniques and your understanding of the link between optical properties and appearance as well as manufacturing methods.


You will use their technical, scientific and soft skills to be an active contributor, an enthusiastic learner and a support for change in an intellectual environment comprising colleagues from diverse fields of design, science, and engineering.


Primary responsibility includes:

  • Collaborating closely and identifying synergies with other CertainTeed and Saint-Gobain R&D centers.
  • Communicating clearly scientific, technical issues, approaches, and results in technical reports and presentations.
  • Proposing and driving methods, solutions and tools inspired from best practices in other industries.
  • Developing and implementing digital tools including appearance capture, procedural material creation, automatic asset management and modification, converting digital designs to the physical world. As well as building and maintaining graphical user interfaces for these tools.
  • Attending technical and scientific meetings and symposia; interacting with the building and design community to create collaborations with leading universities and/or construction technology laboratories to ensure that the CertainTeed is technologically at the cutting edge of the industry.
  • Providing technical insight into various phenomena that contribute to light reflection, solar performance and aesthetic aspects of building materials
  • Applying advanced scientific knowledge and analytical methods to create and evaluate new materials, products and/or technologies

  • BS Degree with a minimum of 7+ years’ experience, or MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD in Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or other related disciplines.
  • Prior research experience (academic or applied) will include measurement, modification or reproduction of appearance linked to the optical properties of the material, as well as programming experience with software such as Python, MATLAB and/or OpenCV.
  • Prior experience with and knowledge with regards to Optics, digital image processing, analysis and creation
