Senior Research Engineer - Grinding Applications Technology & System Components- Job Opening ID: 558224

Saint-Gobain’s North American R&D Center is looking for driven, talented, and energetic researchers to join a newly-formed team within Abrasives R&D and lead projects for key product and application development programs.


Develop and apply a deep understanding of how abrasive product design and other process factors impact grinding system performance.   Job functions include the following:

  • Developing expertise in the measurement and analysis of grinding applications, including leading projects to create and evaluate new process measurement  systems and  techniques that enhance our capability to quantitatively  describe Abrasives processes, designing and executing related experiments, supervising junior engineers or technicians in the running of internal experiments and field trials, and working with product and application engineers to deploy such knowledge and tools to support new product launches. 
  • Working with R&D colleagues and Grinding Technology Centers globally to ensure high quality internal product tests by developing effective application simulations (equipment, tooling, methodology, SOP’s, data management, etc.), ensuring efficient usage of global testing resources and facilitating best representation of data and results in terms of grinding process phenomena and product failure processes.   
  • Collaborating with supervisor and other members of the business unit to propose new applications and other growth opportunities for the Abrasives business, writing proposals, leading related projects, or participating as the applications expert in such projects led by the various Abrasives business units. 
  • Leading the evaluation of tools and other elements of a given grinding system, such as right angle grinders, other hand tools, vacuum systems, etc. 
  • Developing and maintaining expertise in technologies within the scope of work, along with related research in academia and industry. 
  • Writing clear, concise technical reports and making oral presentations of studies, results and recommendations.


  • Research or industrial experience in machining, grinding, lapping/polishing of engineering materials. Knowledge of abrasive products and applications is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with process measurement system development and use. 
  • Project management skills, team collaboration, and oral and written communication skills are required.   
  • Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with years of experience including but not limited to demonstration of hands-on experimental work, familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of data and interpretation.  
  • Proven project management skills, including autonomous leading of simultaneous projects and execution of associated tasks.    
  • Demonstrated adequate knowledge in HSE.  
  • Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues at various levels.   
  • Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment. 
  • Ability to network within and outside of the group.   
  • Capability to understand company policies and corporate structure.
