Senior Research Engineer I - Bonded Abrasives - Job Opening ID: 571033

Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for a driven, talented, and creative researcher to join the Bonded Abrasives R&D team. The Bonded Abrasives team develops high-performance abrasive products designed for use in a wide range of demanding applications.


The Senior Research Engineer will perform R&D work in the field of organic bonded abrasives composites to support the development of innovative new products, new processes, technology transfer and scale-up, and improvements for our customers. Working closely with R&D colleagues, product managers, process engineers, external customers, and the manufacturing plants, the candidate will create and execute project plans, perform lab-scale experiments and manufacturing trials, and analyze and present data. The candidate will play a role in proposing projects and programs and serve as a technical leader within a product platform.


The incumbent will be responsible for producing high value outputs in the following key result areas:

  • Responsible for developing new Bonded Abrasive Organic product and process technologies in-line with business goals. Close work with Manufacturing and Product Management teams in order to supply solutions to SGA customers is required.
  • Plan, conduct, and interpret laboratory, pilot, and plant based experiments independently and in partnership with other team members. Experimental design and statistical techniques will be used.
  • Support the manufacturing and field testing of experimental products. The candidate will define test parameters, gather data, interpret and report results.
  • Working in a matrix organization, the candidate will be able to communicate and interact effectively with a range of people including business, manufacturing, and research managers, process engineers, R&D engineers, technicians, and operators.
  • Document results in clear and coherent technical reports and presentations in a manner consistent with company intellectual property procedures.


  • Bachelor with 7+ years of experience, MS with 3+ years of experience, or entry level PhD in Polymer Science & Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field with significant experience in polymer chemistry and engineering.
  • Expertise in formulating, processing and characterizing organic-based composites. Experience in thermosets a plus.
  • A hands-on creative problem-solving approach to product and process development.
  • Demonstrated project leadership including project management and team collaboration.
  • Well-developed analytical and statistical skills with the ability to design and interpret experiments.
  • Knowledge of abrasives and grinding science is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work effectively with different cultures and business climates.
  • Proactive commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally and flexible working hours as required for project work.
