Senior Research Engineer - Performance Grinding Solutions - Job Opening ID: 565659

Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for driven, talented, and energetic researchers to join a newly-formed team within Abrasives R&D: Performance Grinding Solutions (PGS). Saint-Gobain Abrasives created PGS in response to a strong demand for grinding process knowledge. This trend has been building due to a changing workforce, as well as the evolution of data collection and communication with customer investments in Industry 4.0 and IIoT. The vision of PGS is to provide connected products, digital tools and consultative services, leveraging strengths in grinding application technology.

 

 

Job functions include the following:

• Developing expertise in “digitizing” grinding applications, including leading projects to develop solutions that enable Industry 4.0 for customers (connected products, process monitoring and diagnostic systems, etc.), designing and executing related experiments, supervising junior engineers or technicians in the running of internal experiments and field trials, and working with product and application engineers to deploy such systems at customer locations.

• Leading projects involving cross-functional teams (R&D colleagues, Saint-Gobain Grinding Technology Centers and SGA application engineers) globally to ensure high quality solutions to meet PGS needs, including a solid synergy of grinding applications technology, connected objects and connected systems, and facilitating best representation of data and results in terms of grinding process phenomena. Projects can be a combination of short and mid-term efforts running in parallel.

• Managing projects driven by internal collaborators: providing technical/customer inputs, facilitating exchanges, co-owning field trials and enabling delivery of project objectives.

• Collaborating with supervisor and other members of the business unit to identify new opportunities and convert them to proof-of-concept proposals, leading related projects, or participating as the grinding applications expert in such projects led by the various Abrasives business units.

• Working with internal collaborators to develop a robust IP portfolio in the area of digital solutions for Saint-Gobain Abrasives.

• Developing and maintaining expertise in technologies within and adjacent to the scope of work, keeps a regular watch on competitor activity, along with related research in academia and industry.

• Writing clear, concise technical reports and making oral presentations of studies, results and recommendations.

 

COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

• Research or industrial experience in machining, grinding, lapping/polishing of engineering materials and abrasive applications.

• Hands-on experience with usage of process measurement systems including data acquisition via sensors.

• Project management skills, team collaboration, and oral and written communication skills are required.

• Must possess a body of technical work commensurate with years of experience including but not limited to demonstration of hands-on experimental work, familiarity with statistical tools, data analysis, and drawing conclusions based on a collection of data and interpretation.

• Demonstrated adequate knowledge in HSE.

• Agility and entrepreneurial spirit to work in a newly formed business unit.

• Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues at various levels.

• Respectful communication and ability to collaborate in a team environment.

• Ability to network within and outside of the group.

• Capability to understand company policies and corporate structure.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:

• MS in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, materials engineering or a closely related discipline with 5+ years of industrial experience, or PhD in a similar research field with 3+ years of industrial experience.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with R&D and business unit management, application engineering teams, plant personnel and customers.

• The successful candidate should be able to solve technical problems by combining technology trends, scientific and experiential knowledge and hands-on experimental data.
