Senior Research Engineer - Transport Phenomena - Job Opening ID: 547300



The Materials Technology group is looking for a Senior Research Engineer to join their team within the Competency Research Labs at the Saint-Gobain Northboro R&D center. The Materials Technology group works closely with Saint Gobain’s various business units to solve problems, develop new products, and improve production processes.


Your main responsibilities in this role will be to:

  • Lead multiple projects in the transport phenomena field, assigned to you or that you propose. The projects may be related to the development of competencies and to the internal dissemination of knowledge and information, or directly driven by needs expressed by Saint-Gobain businesses. Projects are managed effectively with minimal supervision by a technical leader.
  • Elaborate projects’ scientific strategy, goals and deliverables with minimum guidance.
  • Identify and, when relevant, partner with internal competencies and/or universities to advance projects and develop competencies.
  • Summarize projects’ approach and results in concise and accurate technical memos.
  • Communicate projects’ strategy and results to internal customers and management through formal presentations.
  • Demonstrate open and collaborative approach in all areas of responsibility and seek out others to enhance and streamline development and decision making.
  • Champion efforts to drive HSE initiatives and consciousness in the organization.


  • Ability to proactively interact with internal customers to:
  • Clearly define their needs.
  • Reach a consensus on projects’ strategy, goals and deliverables.
  • For problems in the transport phenomena field:
    • Ability to autonomously conduct order of magnitude analyses to identify major physical phenomena and simplify analyses to the relevant physics. 
    • Ability to autonomously design, set up and conduct relevant lab experiments.
    • Ability to establish long term and short term projects’ scientific strategy and goals with minimum guidance.
  • Proficiency with CFD softwares such as Ansys Fluent – experience in the development of User Defined Functions is a plus.
  • Experience with transport phenomena related sensors (example: thermocouples, infrared cameras, heat flux sensors, flow meters).
  • Proficiency with Matlab or other numerical computing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to write concise and accurate technical documents and give strong technical presentations to a wide variety of audience.
  • Experience in the development of finite volume, finite differences or finite element codes to solve transport phenomena problems is a plus.


  • PhD with 3+ years of experience or MS with 7+ years of experience or BS Degree with 12+ years of experience. Curriculum in Mechanical Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, with an emphasis on transport phenomena (heat transfer, mass transfer, phase change, fluid mechanics including two-phase flows). Experience in the development of experimental and numerical approaches to solve industrial transport phenomena problems. 
  • Must have led successful projects aiming to develop new products, improve production processes, or provide scientific insight to guide decision making.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with all levels of management, customers, colleagues, and external partners.
